We are looking for a dynamic Director of Human Resources who has a passion for people.

The preferred candidate, is part of large scale international company, ideally located in Portugal with multiple business unites. Experience in the hospitality industry would be an added advantage.

The successful candidate is already familiar to a level of expert in the various key functions of Human Resources – Administration, Recruitment, Employee Relations, Training, Benefits & Welfare, Government Relations and financial planning.

A part from being responsible for the total payroll budgeting and monthly forecasting, other key focus areas are, further developing a learning & personal development culture, in order to retain the best talent in the market place, develop a strategy to manage the current challenges of a seasonal business and to overcome the pressure to identify and attract the right quality and quantity of associates on the local labor market. To be a member of the Executive Committee of the Resort and to ensure that the key KPIs of the property in relation to financial goals, and especially quality and service excellence are maintain and further improved.

This position is part of the Executive Committee and as a senior leader, the successful candidate is expected to be able to contribute to the overall business plan and strategies as well as lead and present with confidence.

Department:

As our Director of Human Resources you are responsible for managing a team of HR professionals to deliver great service to our Associates. The role involves the development and implementation of strategies and policies connected with recruitment, training, compensation, employee relations, and recognition programs.

You will use your strong personality to act as an advisor to our Complex General Manager and support, coach and counsel our leadership team on all people-related issues. This position is supporting all HR activities for the Owning Company business.

As well as all the fun aspects of HR that will come naturally to you there will also be an expectation that you will have sound financial acumen and be able to prepare and manage our payroll budgets, forecast as well as work with EFTE calculations.

Job Description:

POSITION PURPOSE

The Director of Human Resources is responsible for the short and long term planning and day-to-day operations of the Human Resources department. Specific duties include ensuring standards and procedures are consistently applied, in addition to coordinating activities with other departments in order to facilitate the achievement the hotel’s goals. The ideal candidate would enjoy leading and developing associates, resolving problems and have excellent communication skills. This position plays an active part in the overall hotel strategy and goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

To maintain an ‘open door’ policy in HR and be personally available to all employees for work / personal problems, grievances, benefit requests, queries and suggestions.

To provide an advice service to both managers and employees on HR policy, legal requirements, staffing issues, and act as an arbitrator where necessary.

Liaising with Managers to establish their recruitment requirements ensuring all recruitment is in line with budget and forecasted levels of business. Follow up with Managers during all stages of the recruitment process, keeping them informed of progress and ensuring that HR is aware of all actions.

Maintain a working recruitment policy ensuring all legal and Starwood regulations are met, including authorization of payroll actions and new hires.

To ensure all employee files are kept up to date – and to ensure confidentiality of employee information is maintained at all time, in line with Data Protection legislation.

To provide a source of information to Department Heads regarding disciplinary, grievance and employee counseling issues. Ensure all disciplinary procedures are carried out, taking role of arbitrator, note taker or advisor where appropriate.

Manage the sick leave policy of the hotel in conjunction with Department Heads. Responsible for logging of all sick leave and other absence and provide information to managers on levels of sick leave. Take a proactive role in cases of extended or repeated sickness absence.

Ensure exit interviews conducted with all leavers, passing information to appropriate manager and provide analysis of exit interviews on a quarterly basis, to ensure proactive steps are taken to reduce employee turnover.

SUPPORTIVE FUNCTIONS

In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of the following supportive functions:

Coach and counsel employees and managers.

Advise the general manager and the executive committee of potential human resources opportunities.

Perform assessment of executives.

Initiate and maintain relationships with community leaders.

Requirements:

  • The successful candidate will be an experienced HR Director, preferably with Hotel experience. They will speak fluent Portuguese and English and will have proven experience in employee labour relations.
  • The HR Director will have a strong focus on business as well as delivering high quality, innovative HR solutions. Good leadership and influencing skills are required, as well as the abiltiy to bring teams together, managing conflict out of any situation.
  • Master degree or equivalent from an accredited colleague or University with major in Human Resources
  • Management or Hotel Management is a must.

SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Most tasks are performed independently or in a team environment with the employee acting as a team leader. There is minimal direct supervision.
  • Must possess basic computational ability.
  • Thorough knowledge of wage and salary, employment and benefits administration and payroll.
  • Ability to be proactive and reactive to anticipated and sudden changes especially as they relate to the labor situation.
  • Ability to focus and maintain attention to performance of tasks and to work and complete assignments on time despite frequent stressful, emergency, critical or unusual interruptions.
  • Ability to create, implement and monitor hotel and staff goals, strategies and policies.
  • Ability to be resourceful, creative and maintain flexibility.
  • Ability to train, motivate, evaluate, mentor and direct employees and managers to meet desired ends.
  • Ability to maintain excellent relations with staff and maintain staff and guest confidentiality at all times.
  • Ability to accept responsibility for actions of others.
  • Ability to lead by example.
  • Ability to participate in (and lead when necessary) all departmental and hotel-wide meetings.
  • Must be proficient in local language Portuguese and English.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

Education

Master degree or equivalent required.

Experience

  • Minimum five years of Human Resources leadership experience. Line operations management and labor related experience preferred.
  • Must be familiar with Word, Excel, Email and Internet
  • Must be able to show previous delivery and execution of business based projects.
