The main underwriting parts of the Group are:

  • Hiscox UK and Europe offers a range of specialist insurance for professionals and business customers, as well as high net worth individuals.
  • Hiscox International includes operations in USA, Guernsey and Direct Asia offering a range of specialist insurance.
  • Hiscox London Market, Hiscox Re and Hiscox MGA underwrites mainly internationally traded business in the London and Bermuda insurance markets – generally large or complex business which needs to be shared with other insurers or needs the international licences of Lloyd’s.

Hiscox has three vital questions for every risk – “Who is the insured? Who is the insured? Who is the insured?”. Who we insure is as important as what we insure. Whatever the business, be it a global oil company or a one man professional practice, we are interested in the management and how the business is run. Our belief is that the good insured always pays too much, and the bad insured too little. By seeking out the good insured and avoiding the bad, we are able to offer wide cover at reasonable premiums.

Hiscox Europe

Hiscox Europe covers Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal.

The FTE headcount is around 320 and the total number of people is around 345.

As a business we generate sales of around €211m per annum via two main product streams “Art and Private Client” (high net worth private households, personal fine art and public and personal collections) and “Professional, Specialty and Commercial” (which provides insurance products to small to medium sized businesses).

Most of our business is conducted through other businesses, Insurance brokers, or through other financial services businesses such as banks.

The role

Support Europe Finance Controller, Group Tax and country Finance Managers in the accomplishment of European Tax reporting activities and deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support Country Finance Managers in the preparation and maintenance of tax records, returns, reports and other related materials;
  • Oversight of the completion and filling of European corporate tax returns;
  • Participates in the development and implementation of tax strategy;
  • Devises legal means to minimize tax liability using thorough knowledge of tax laws and regulations;
  • Recommends alternative tax treatments to alleviate or reduce tax burden;
  • Be involved in complex Tax audit requests;
  • Liaising with Group tax and coordination role with external parties to meet agreed Tax submission deadlines;
  • Find proactive approaches to ensure regulatory, tax, corporate and compliance requirements are met when applicable;
  • Advice and support Finance Managers and other departments on more complex Tax questions;
  • Actively support Group Tax Manager in Transfer Pricing compliance management;
  • Keep Transfer Pricing documentation updated in line with BEPS Action 13 (working with external advisors when appropriate);
  • Prepare and submit relevant data for CBCR and associated disclosures in line with BEPS Action 13;
  • Monitoring external developments to identify changes/challenges on the horizon and devise appropriate response for the Group;
  • Monitor European IPT compliance management;
  • Monitor European VAT compliance management;
  • Create and/or review Tax processes and internal documentation;

Uses best practices and knowledge of internal or external business issues to improve products/services or processes.

Person Specification

You will ideally

  • You will have a degree qualification in Tax/Accounting area or equivalent;
  • Fluent in English; Other European languages – Dutch, French, German, Spanish or Portuguese would be welcome;
  • Strong and confident communication skills;
  • Excellent accuracy and attention to detail and Quality to produce high quality output even when dealing with high volume and under time pressure;
  • You would need to be able to explain your findings in a simple way that does not mislead or confuse;
  • Ability to organise and prioritise and plan workload to meet deadlines;
  • Demonstrating personal integrity; doing what they say they’ll do when they said they’d do it;
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships in and outside Hiscox and manage different level of stakeholders;
  • Good Customer Focus;
  • Critical thinking and a can do attitude;
  • Results driven, with the energy and determination to succeed in a very fast paced environment where the pace and quality of response is critical to success;

Experience in commercial negotiations is advisable being patient and respectful to our clients/stakeholders and then professionally firm and determined to assure accounting rules are met.

  • Experience of working in an office environment, ideally in a multinational, multi lingual environment. This could include work experience as part of a training programme but is not essential. Experience in Tax is required;
  • Expert knowledge on European taxes calculations is required and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) will be an added value;
  • Experience in insurance or financial services is useful but not essential
  • Good computer skills including Microsoft Outlook, Excel and ERP systems. Good and quick adaptation to internal systems;
  • Good communication skills and ability to be a team player. Have the ability to initiate and facilitate process change and improvement;
  • Be pro-active and driven to achieve goals and objectives;
  • Flexibility to travel;
  • Ability to support team members and the business as a whole;
  • A Team Player who can also work on their own initiative;
