The Hiscox Group is made up of the following business units:

  • Hiscox London Market underwrites mainly internationally traded business in the London Market – generally large or complex business which needs to be shared with other insurers or needs the international licences of Lloyd’s.
  • Hiscox Re our combined reinsurance teams in London, Bermuda and Paris, provide market leading expertise and a wide range of reinsurance products to high-quality insurers around the world.
  • Hiscox Guernsey provides specialist insurance and expertise for global risks including fine art, kidnap and ransom and terrorism
  • Hiscox US operating since 2006 from six locations offering professional liability, specialty and property insurance. Hiscox US also provides small business insurance direct to consumers.
  • Hiscox UK and Hiscox Europe offers a range of specialist insurance for professionals and business customers, as well as high net worth individuals and also provides home and small business insurance directly to consumers.

The Role & Team

The team

This new role reports to the Financial Operations Manager and is part of the development of the UK Finance team based in Lisbon, providing accounting support to Hiscox UK.

This role requires some technical accounting skills combined with strong interpersonal skills to influence both accountants and line managers in Lisbon and the UK. The work on the MGA will require strong attention to detail and ability to learn quickly. A high level of English language skills is required to resolve issues effectively with colleagues based in the UK.

Key Accountabilities

Accounting – 70%

  • Prepare premium journal by bringing together various reports, reformatting data and reconciling in excel.
  • Ledger journals to be posted in Sun Accounts system (premium & cash).
  • Reconciliation between source underwriting systems and Sun financials.
  • Reconciliation of Balance Sheet accounts, including those related to inter-company positions. Ensure all controls are maintained and any differences investigated.
  • Responsible for bank reconciliations, follow up and resolution of those open items.
  • Monitor bank account, prepare payments to carriers and answer any queries they have on the payment amount.

Reporting – 10%

  • Prepare, review and distribute premium Bordereaux to the various carriers involved.
  • Working closely with the MGA Accountant to deliver reports reflecting the business needs.

Team Support – 20%

  • Provide back-up to Agency Financial Accountant for various month-end processes.
  • Assist in ad hoc reports and projects as required.

Person Specification



  • Your ability to work with, influence and communicate, with others, in fluent business level English, is of critical for success in this role.
  • Be highly results driven, with the energy and determination to succeed in a very fast paced environment where the pace of response is critical to success – able to see things through and make things happen.
  • Have well developed analytical, problem solving and root cause identification skills.
  • Be able to make fact based decisions based on facts and data, commercial realities and operational feasibility.
  • Strong planning and execution skills – respecting ambitious timelines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to work with people at all levels within, and external to, the business.
  • Strong relationship building and influencing skills and credibility with key stakeholders in the organisation.
  • Excellent attention to detail with the proven ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced and busy environment. Experience working in dynamic and preferably multi-cultural environments.
  • You will need to be a good team player and at the same time be able to work on your own initiative to get work completed on time and to a consistent high standard.
  • Ability to prioritise work and work effectively and accurately under pressure, ensuring that deadlines are met.



  • Good PC skills, particularly Excel (you should be comfortable using and developing financial formulae).
  • Experience of working in a professional high quality corporate environment is required.


  • A degree in accounting, with experience in insurance accounting and in a multi-national environment.
  • Experience of working in Insurance or for an MGA.

Flexibility, adaptability and the willingness to work hard in an ambitious, pressured environment with limited resources will be required. Success in this role will depend on your ability and motivation to deliver all tasks to the same high standards. The person will need to be a self-started with an ability to work independently, keeping up with a changing environment.

As a part of the Finance Team you will be required to travel to UK, approximately 1 to 2 times per year depending on projects and issues that you are working on. We will provide professional training and development support to help you in the delivery of this role.
